Basic and super cover
The cost of your protection cover varies based on the car you book and the level of liability you're willing to assume.
The default cover is the basic cover which reduces your out-of-pocket liability so that you’re sufficiently covered in the event of an accident, theft of loss. It is the minimum cover you’ll need to book a car on Tarlen and any extra cover you purchase will be in addition to it.
Opting to add a super cover means you'll face lesser out-of-pocket liability in the event of physical damage, theft, or third-party collision damage, this will also lower the security deposit you pay.
This option includes protection for window glass, covering doors, windows, the rear window, and wind-shield, as well as for loss of your car keys.
Tarlen strongly recommends our Guests add a super cover where they can to reduce any liability that might arise from damage, theft or loss.
When you book a car, you’re shown:
Cost of the basic cover.
Your out-of-pocket collision liability for the basic cover.
Your out-of-pocket theft & loss liability for the basic cover.
Your out-of-pocket third party motor liability for the basic cover.
Your security deposit payment for the trip.
We reserve the rights to change the protection cover pricing at any time.
You’re also given the option to “Add Super Cover” showing:
Cost of the additional super cover.
Super cover benefits including window glass cover and loss of key cover
Your reduced out-of-pocket collision liability for the super cover.
Your reduced out-of-pocket theft & loss liability for the super cover.
Your reduced out-of-pocket third party motor liability for the super cover.
Your reduced security deposit.
Your responsibility as a Guest:
As a guest on Tarlen, these are your responsibilities
You must make sure your driver’s license is valid for the trip period.
You must make sure you obey all the rules of the road and never drive under the influence.
You must make sure the car is parked in a safe location. Our liability cover does not cover driver’s negligence so you’ll be fully liable for damages as a result of negligence on your part.
Our liability cover does not cover dishonesty so you’ll be fully liable for damages when you’ve been found to misrepresent the facts about yourself or your trip.
Return the rented car on time and in the same condition you took it.
Physical damage or theft of the vehicle during the booking period up to the liability amount stated in the cover you choose.
Physical damage that results in the total loss of the car up to the liability amount stated in the cover you choose.
Claims process fee.
What we cover
Your protection plan limits the amount that you’re liable for. Providing that you’ve complied with Tarlen’s Terms of Service, you’ll only ever be liable for the stated liability amount.
If that damage amount is less than your stated liability and deposit, we’ll refund the remaining deposited amount.
But if you’ve violated Tarlen’s Terms of Service, we may void your out-of-pocket liability on the plan and this might impact your liability for damage, theft or loss.
Please read through the Terms of Service. The better informed you are, the better prepared you’ll be.
Pre-trip and Post trip pictures
It’s important to take pre-trip and post-trip pictures to activate your cover and protect yourself during a trip. At the start of the trip, take a clear picture of yourself and your driver’s license, take over 8 pictures of both the car interior and exterior, including close-up pictures of any scratches, dents and pre-existing damages.
Take clear pictures of the dashboard showing the fuel level and odometer number and do the same at the end of your trip before you return your car to your host.
Basic Cover
Your basic cover protects you up to the stated liability for:
Damage & Losss.
Third party motor liability.
Passenger liability.
Emergency Roadside assistance.
Medical cost up to R 5000.
Additional Super Cover (optional)
Adding a super cover further reduces your liability for:
Damage & Loss.
Third party motor liability.
Passenger liability.
And provides additional protection for:
Window glass damage. This includes door windows, rear window and windscreen
Loss of keys.
Emergency Roadside assistance.
Medical cost up to R 5000
Your security deposit will be processed back to your account 72hours after your trip is over unless there are outstanding reimbursement requests, damages, or rule violations. Then these issues will be settled before refunding your deposit. It’ll take 3 - 10 working days for the refund to reflect back in your account.
Note: Tarlen’s protection cover does not cover you for damage to the interior of the car, or mechanical damage to the car. You’re responsible for repairs and replacements for interior or mechanical damages that occurred as a result of your negligence during a trip. Normal wear and tear not caused by negligence are not your responsibility. Your reduced liability for the basic or super cover doesn’t apply to interior or mechanical damage.

Guest: This refers to the renters on Tarlen.
Host: This refers to the car owners on Tarlen.
Damage: This refers to any damage to the vehicle.
Loss: This refers to the damage of the rented vehicle that results in it being a total loss,
Cover: Refers to a liability waiver that reduces the amount you’re legally required to pay when there’s a damage or loss.
Liability: This refers to the amount you’re legally required to pay when there’s a damage or loss.
Vehicle: Refers to the cars booked from Tarlen Hosts.
